To mark Earth Day this year, we wanted to do a shout-out to some of our favorite clean beauty brands that go above and beyond traditional green business strategies. From labor-intensive biodynamic harvesting, to post-consumer waste recycled packaging, these brands engage in environmental practices that are paving the way for a more sustainable future and a healthier planet.

Dr. Alkaitis

As a Molecular Biologist, Ethnopharmacologist, and Pharmacognist, Dr. Saulius Alkaitis’ namesake brand is a force to be reckoned with. 100% organic, ethically wild-crafted ingredients are harvested using biodynamic agricultural techniques. Ingredients never heated above body temperature ensure their “living” active therapeutic benefits adjust and adapt to each individuals skin type. Combining a wealth of botanical knowledge and extensive background in indigenous traditional medicine renders this holistically rooted skincare safe enough to eat.

Vapour Beauty

Award-winning makeup line beloved by clean beauty aficionados and ingredients-savvy obsessives worldwide, Vapour Organic Beauty has successfully blurred the line between skincare and cosmetics. Their signature lit-from-within glow is achieved by suspending fine, richly saturated mineral pigments in Vapour’s Herbal Enlightenment Complex. Consisting of wildcrafted frankincense, organic tulsi and organic lotus, Herbal Enlightenment Complex helps to soothe, calm and protect. You can learn all about Vapour’s signature infusion complexes here.

All Vapour high-performance products contain a minimum 70% organic, 30% mineral pigment/essential oil formula. Operating their own USDA approved organic lab, raw materials are meticulously sourced and safeguarded. Sustainably produced using passive solar and wind power in Taos, New Mexico; biodegradable ingredients are housed in post-consumer recycled and recyclable packaging. Deservingly awarded Champion Safety Status from the EWG and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics certified. Notably in 2018, the brand moved all its plastic packaging to glass.

Meow Meow Tweet

Vegan, small-batch skin care company based out of Accord, New York, Meow Meow Tweet encourages small changes in the lives of their users through physical, emotional and ecological mindfulness. Freshly scented, efficacious formulas are produced using pure, all-natural and organic ingredients that are lovingly hand wrapped in post-consumer packaging. Fun, accessible personal care products that work diligently to foster change in the environment, Meow Meow Tweet supports over 28 philanthropic organizations including The Ocean Cleanup, Earthjustice, and the Sierra Club.

David’s Toothpaste

One of the easiest clean beauty swaps, Davids premium natural toothpaste is a pioneer in providing a sustainable alternative to conventional options. SLS (sulfate) and fluoride -free, premium natural ingredients sourced from 98% USA origin ingredients compose their domestic essential oil, vegan, plant and mineral base that is housed in a 100% recyclable metal tube. 100% wind power produced carton packaging, reduces an estimated 4,199,796 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually while further committing to only using paper sourced from Forest Stewardship Counsel (FSC) protected and managed forests. Who knew one product could do so much?

OSEA

 Ocean. Sun. Earth. Atmosphere.

The finest naturally-derived ingredients sourced from the Earth and Sea comprise this award-winning, results-driven skincare line. Always vegan, paraben, cruelty, gluten-free, non-GMO and 100% biodegradable. An obvious influencer in the industry, OSEA continues to represent an on-going, multi-generational promise to protect your health and the environment.

Let’s be real! Few people like the feeling of sweaty armpits and even less so the appearance of wet patches, or the embarrassing hint of body odor. But for far too long we’ve been led to believe that sweating is somehow bad and must be stopped…by any means and at any cost. Even at the cost of our health!…

In our quest for looking and smelling beautiful, many of us have ignored a basic biology lesson and that is that sweating is a very natural, normal and essential way of ridding our body of toxins. It’s good to sweat! Why would we  tinker with what appears to be a perfectly brilliant detox system?

Enter the age of anti-perspirants, created to block sweat ducts and reduce the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. As body odor is produced by the bacterial breakdown of sweat on the skin, this ‘blocking’ of sweat at first seems like a perfect solution, except for the fact that the ‘blocking’ agents are actually very dangerous chemicals, which we’re unwittingly admitting into our bodies. Do we really want to do that?

The worst of the worst of these blocking agents deserve a mention at this point: Aluminum and Parabens. Aluminum is used in antiperspirants to block pores to reduce the amount of sweat we produce. Here’s an irony though – blocking our pores can actually cause our bodies to produce even more sweat to try and push through the Aluminum barrier! This blockage and build up of sweat and aluminum in the body can affect hormone levels, creating a greater chance of developing breast cancer. Oh, and by the way, aluminum exposure has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Parabens are used as preservatives in beauty products and among other hazards have recently been linked to the disruption of hormone regulation. Breasts have a large amount of estrogen and other hormones that need regulation, so any interference with these can make it possible for cancerous cells to form.

Here’s where it gets really disturbing! It’s regularly stated that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Most breast cancers start to form at the outside of the breast, near the underarm. It seems we could not be using toxic products in a more sensitive area.

Our lymph nodes are located throughout our body but the largest groupings are found in the armpits, neck and groin areas. Lymph carries white blood cells, which are responsible for protecting the body against viruses and bacteria (and may trap cancer cells) – one very important reason why we don’t want to apply any more possible cancer-causing chemicals in this area.

Fortunately with the emergence of more natural self-care regimes and products, many people have stopped using antiperspirants and switched to deodorants. A deodorant basically does what is says it will do, and that is prevent unwanted odor (it does not prevent us sweating…and that’s good!). Ingredients in deodorants are essentially designed to eliminate or mask the smell caused by the bacteria.

Unfortunately, with the proliferation of chemicals in the beauty industry, a switch to deodorant may not be enough. You see, not all deodorants are created equal! Many regular deodorants are still filled with a plethora of toxic chemicals, including Triclosan, Phthalates, Fragrance, Steareths and Propylene Glycol.

The good news, however, is that we’re all learning to be less tolerant of toxic products and today there are so many alternative natural deodorants that are not made with harmful ingredients. The base ingredient in most of these is a seed oil (coconut, jojoba, or sunflower), and they’re scented with essential oils, not synthetic fragrances. They also use natural ingredients such as baking soda, arrowroot powder or charcoal to absorb sweat and moisture.

We need to be just as mindful of what we put on our body as we’ve become about what we put into our body. Switching to a natural deodorant is a great start! Click here to see the natural deodorant brands that we carry.

Ever been curious about the ingredients in your nail polish? Well, we did the research so you don’t have to! The EPA classifies normal nail polish as household hazardous waste, click here to find out where you can properly dispose of your old toxic polish, and read below to find out what’s in your nail polish and the brand that is making nail polish safe.

Most nail polishes contain toxic chemicals, including Formaldehyde, Toluene and Dibutyl Phthalate(DBT). And these are just to name a few! Formaldehyde is a chemical carcinogen released into the air through hazardous waste items – long-term exposure can cause cancer. Toluene also is released into the air, seeps into your skin, and is known to cause birth defects, long-term central nervous system issues, as well as liver and kidney damage. Dibutyl Phthalate is linked to reproductive and respiratory problems, and possibly cancer.

These are the top three chemicals contained in most nail polishes, but by no means the only ones. Below are five more ingredients often found in nail polish, and their potential effects on your health:

  • Camphor – can cause serious skin irritations and respiratory damage
  • Parabens – disrupt hormone function, which can lead to cancer and reproductive issues
  • Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP) – linked to reproductive harm
  • Xylene – an allergen, which can have a negative impact on your central nervous system
  • Gluten – can cause serious health problems for those who are gluten-intolerant

It’s not all bad news though! Côte Nail Polish does not contain any of these ingredients and still produces high-quality, beautifully colored products.

We believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your health to have gorgeous nails, and with Côte, it seems you don’t have to!

Rahua Rainforest Grown Hair Care | We got a new hair care line in, and it’s safe to say, we’re OBSESSED! Rahua is everything you’ve ever wanted and more for your hair.

The line is made using organic, pure plant-derived ingredients that are non-toxic, free of Parabens, Sulfates, and Gluten.

Different to other botanical oils or widely-used silicones that only coat the hair strands’ exterior, the extremely small size of the Rahua oil molecule allows for deeper penetration of the hair’s cortex – bonding and repairing it – while simultaneously smoothing the hair’s cuticle.

All these products leave your hair stronger and smoother!

We’re so thrilled to share that SeaMakers & Co. was selected as a winner in San Diego Magazine’s Best of San Diego 2017 for Shopping and Beauty!

According to San Diego Magazine, we were chosen for our unique East Coast Style and for being the only store in San Diego to carry so many of American-made, toxin- and cruelty-free beauty brands that we’re proud to partner with.

As a new business (we opened in La Jolla in November 2016), to be featured as a Best Store in San Diego is a huge honor for us. We’re so grateful to the many locals and visitors for their support of us, and of the ‘clean beauty’ movement.
